103-year-old message bottle discovered at Roslyn Grist Mill

A 103-year-old message bottle was discovered at the Roslyn Grist Mill by construction workers during restoration. The Roslyn Grist Mill dates back to 1715 and is a time capsule of Long Island colonial life. When the Roslyn Landmark Society, which is overseeing the $4 million restoration project, found a bottle with two letters and vintage coins inside – it was like hitting the history jackpot.
Howard Kroplick, president of the Roslyn Landmark Society, says one letter "was in Italian script and the other one was in pencil and described who worked on the Grist Mill." He adds that a "1863 Haitian coin…two Indian head pennies and very unusual Civil War token" were also found.
The bottle was discovered encased in concrete by construction workers underneath a staircase. "When we are finished with this restoration, we will put our own message in a bottle so people in 103 years will remember us," Kroplick says. The bottle, coins and letters will be on display once the Roslyn Grist Mill is completely restored, which is expected to take about two years.
